High-Speed Clips from 'How Sharks Hunt', and 'Shark City' - Discovery Shark Week 2011

Underwater DoP Andy Casagrande filmed sharks in South Africa , and the Bahamas with the Phantom GOLD in a REDSEE underwater housing. 450fps saved straight to Cinemag, 14mm Cooke S4 lens. The housing is extremely robust, and depth rated to 60m.

Wind Tunnel PIV

This shot of airflow around an airplane engine turbine blade shows the turbulence that can occur at the surface. The v1610 was valuable because it was able to capture a wide field-of-view because of its high resolution, while providing the speed and detail required to see the phenomena. The researchers are interested in how this turbulence occurs and what can be done to control it. This was shot at 1280x800 and 12,000 fps.

This was illuminated by a 2W sheet of laser light. A 50mm lens was used.

Underwater Blast

Under water explosion. The researcher, Associate Professor Kazutaka Kitagawa at the Aichi Institute of Technology is interested in the shock waves generated and how they shrink and expand bubbles. The v1610 allows the researcher to see the surface detail of the bubble. This was shot at 30,000 fps at an original resolution of 512x704 using a 90mm macro lens and halogen backlighting.

This is a fascinating shot and there is lot going on. Play it at least three times and watch what happens above the water surface, at the water surface and below the water surface!

The Marangoni Effect

The event that takes place is called the Marangoni effect where a soap film stabilises the surface tension of the bubble allowing it to self-heal after the water drop passes through.

This clip was shot by Gaven Mitchell, a student of Scientific Photography at RMT University, and Vision Research's own Phil Taylor, an Application Engineer in Singapore.

The video was shot on a Phantom v4.3 at 800 x 600 @ 1200fps; the exposure of 250ms; using a Nikkor 180mm f2.8 @ min focus distance.

Here is a movie of a Pyrex bowl punctured by a spring loaded center punch taken at 88,000 frames per second. At this speed the camera is reduced to 128 x 128 pixels. Belgian National Soccer Team

Michaël Bombeeck shot a commercial using the Phantom v12 digital high-speed camerafor the Belgian National Soccer Team. Actually the whole commercial was shot on the Phantom v12. We shot from 100fps up to a 1000fps. Our challenge was to combine real high speed with 3D high speed. We shot with small high speed lenses.
